Rafael Nadal v Milos Raonic Head to Head

The pair have met nine times before, with Nadal leading their head to head series by seven matches to two, although it has been two years since their last encounter. That was the same year Raonic notched up one of his two victories against the Spaniard in Brisbane, the other coming at Indian Wells in 2015. However, Nadal has had the edge in most of their matches..

Nadal, First Match Since US Open Triumph

This will the first time that European crowds will get to see the newly crowned US Open champion in action, and he will be sure to get a rapturous welcome, as the Spaniard competes with local hero Roger Federer to be the centre of attention in Geneva.

Now within one of Federer’s all-time Grand Slam record of 20 titles, Nadal started his season relatively slowly, by his own very high standards. After losing to Novak Djokovic in the Melbourne final, he suffered a few uncharacteristic defeats, and,  despite reaching the semi-finals in Indian Wells and Monte Carlo, it took him until the French Open before he clinched his first title of the season.

Since then, though, he has only lost one match, the Wimbledon semi-final to Federer, picking up the Rogers Cup as well as the US Open title in the process.

Raonic, Injury Problems for Big Serving Canadian

The 28-year old beaten Wimbledon semi-finalist began the year in promising fashion, getting to the quarter-final in Melbourne before losing to Lucas Pouille of France.  He then got to the semi-finals in Indian Wells and Stuttgart, and there were signs that the Canadian, possessor of one of the most powerful serves on tour, may be on the verge of getting back to the sort of form that made him a top five player in the world.

Unfortunately for Raonic, injuries have since derailed his progress. His problems began during the Rogers Cup in front of his home fans in Montreal, when he was forced to retire from his second round match with compatriot Felix Auger-Aliassime.  And they continued to the US Open when he was forced to pull out of his first round match without hitting a ball.

This will be his first match since then.

Nadal v Raonic Predictions & Tips

Nadal is the clear odds-on favourite to win this match for Team Europe at 27/100, whilst Raonic is priced at 202/67. The Spaniard has only lost one match in three months, whilst Raonic, in that same time, has played hardly any tennis due to injuries. This should be a straightforward victory for the European side.

Tip: Nadal to win in straight sets: 4/7 (888Sport)
