Denis Shapovalov v Egor Gerasimov Head to Head

This will be the first meeting between the 20-year old Canadian, and the man from Belarus, six years his junior.

Shapovalov Looking for Late Season Form

20-year-old Shapovalov will be happy to see the end of what has been a disappointing year for the 2016 Junior Wimbledon champion. It started well enough, and a second Masters semi-final appearance in Miami, hinted at more to come.

Instead he has struggled with a loss of form and inconsistency, and has endured the frustration of seeing his friend Felix Auger-Aliassime, rather than him, assuming the mantle from Milos Raonic of Canada’s top player.

His struggles this year were clearly in evidence during his second round victory over the American qualifier, Bradley Klahn in the second round on Thursday, dropping the first set to the world number 97, before fighting back to scrape past him in a third set tie-break.

Gerasimov Defeat of Isner Continues Extraordinary Run

It would be fair to say that Gerasimov was not a well-known name, even amongst those who follow tennis closely, until a little more than a week ago.

That was when, having qualified for the St. Petersburg Open, he advanced to the semi-final of the tournament, beating along the way, Matteo Berrettini of Italy, the man who got to the semi-finals in the US Open.  He lost to the eventual winner, Daniil Medvedev, but that run was enough to propel the man, who only won his maiden Grand Slam match at New York last month, into the top 100 for the first time.

Some may have wondered if that was a flash in the pan, but, having beaten the Chinese wildcard Zhe Li in three sets on Tuesday, he produced one of best-ever performances of his career on Thursday to knock-out the number one seed, John Isner.

It was a very close match, with neither man dropping his serve, and it was decided in the end by three tie-breaks. Isner took the first by 13 points to 11, but Gerasimov then levelled, and took his chances in the third to make his second successive ATP quarter-final.

Shapovalov v Gerasimov Predictions & Tips

Shapovalov is the odds-on favourite to win this match at 8/15, whilst Gerasimov is priced at 7/4. However, based on recent form alone, the man from Belarus may have the edge. He is in the form of his life, whilst Shapovalov is scratching around for consistency. Gerasimov must be in with a good chance of reaching his second ATP semi-final in a week.

Tip: Gerasimov to win in three sets: 7/2 (888Sport)
