Alexander Bublik v Pablo Carreno Busta Head to Head

The pair have met once before, in the quarter-final of the Moscow Open in 2016, with Carreno-Busta winning a three set encounter on a tie break.

Bublik, Second ATP Final

This is Bublik’s second ever ATP final, coming just two months after his first, the Hall of Fame championships in Newport, Rhode Island in July, where he lost to John Isner.

Now the 22-year old may think he will never get a better chance to secure his first senior title, having enjoyed success already this year on the Challenger tour, where he has already won three events.

He has had to work harder for his place than his opponent on Sunday, beginning with the first round where he saw off the challenge of the number six seed, Taylor Fritz, in three sets. He then had a more straight-forward win over Jordan Thompson of Australia, before he pulled off a major surprise, knocking out the US Open semi-finalist, Grigor Dimitrov, in a tense three set battle that was decided on a third set tie-break.

He had the easier semi-final on paper, against Lloyd Harris, but the South African pushed him close in the first set before he won it on a tie-break, and then was able to secure a service break in the second to close out the match.

Carreno Busta’s Second Semi-Final of the Year

Carreno Busta finds himself in his first final since he won the last of his three ATP finals in Estoril, in May 2017. That represents a welcome return to a form for a man who reached a career high ranking of ten in the world after reaching the semi-final of the US Open that same year, but who has subsequently struggled with form and consistency, to the extent that he began the tournament down at 63 in the ATP listings.

He has got to this stage fairly comfortably.

He began his run in Chengdu with a straight sets win over Moldovan Radu Albot, before his first real test came against the number three seed, Benoit Paire, who he defeated in three sets. He then beat Christian Garin of Chile in the quarter-final on Friday, before knocking out Denis Shapovalov of Canada, the last remaining seed, again in straight sets, in their semi-final.

Bublik v Carreno Busta Predictions & Tips

At the start of the week, long odds would have been offered on either man making the final, let alone both of them. However, having got here, both will want to take full advantage of the opportunity they have been given.

As the higher ranked player and the man with more experience, Carreno-Busta will start as favourite at 43/100, especially as he won their only previous meeting, whilst Bublik is priced at 46/25. However, in a week of surprises, it would not be a shock if this event had one more in store.

Tip: Carreno Busta to win in three sets: 7/2 (888Sport)
