David Goffin v Pablo Carreno Busta Head to Head

The pair have played each other three times before, significantly perhaps, twice in the last five weeks. Goffin won their last meeting in Oeiras, Portugal in 2013, and again at the US Open last month. However, Carreno Busta turned the tables in Metz two weeks ago.

Goffin, Enjoying Late Season Revival

28 year old Goffin has endured a difficult couple of years. Ranked as high as seven in the world in November 2017, a loss of form and inconsistency has seen him gradually slide the rankings in the intervening period.

Therefore, his run of form in the latter half of the season, which has helped arrest that decline, has been very welcome to him. It began in Halle, where he reached the final, only to lose to Roger Federer. He then continued that good form into Wimbledon, where he reached his third Grand Slam quarter final, losing to the eventual winner, Novak Djokovic.

That was followed by a run to the final in Cincinnati, his best ever showing at a Masters’ event, and then he made it to the fourth round at the US Open, before coming up against Federer yet again.

However, in his last tournament in Metz in France, he was beaten easily by his opponent on Tuesday in the second round.

Carreno Busta, A Winner Again in Chengdu

Carreno Busta comes into this tournament with the enormous boost of having won his first tournament in more than two years on Sunday, the Chengdu Open, coming from a set down to beat the Kazakh Alexander Bublik in a third set tie-break. That ended a barren spell for the Spaniard that had lasted since the Estoril Open in 2017, and, which, combined with a run to the semi-final at the US Open that same year, had seen him climb into the world’s top ten.

Since then, he had struggled, like Goffin, for form and consistency, but his impressive performance in Chengdu, which saw him defeat two seeds in the process, Benoit Paire and Denis Shapovalov, has suggested he could yet return to his former level of performance.

Goffin v Carreno Busta Predictions & Tips

Goffin is the odds-on favourite to win this match at 11/20 whilst Carreno Busta is priced at 11/8. The odds are slightly generous to the Belgian, given that he was so easily beaten by the Spaniard just two weeks ago. However, since then Goffin has had the luxury of a rest, whilst Carreno Busta has been winning his fourth career title in Chengdu. He has got very little recovery time before playing Goffin, and that may give the Belgian player the edge.

Tip: Goffin to win in  straight sets: 7/5 (888Sport)
