Elina Svitolina v Wang Yafan Head to Head

This will be the second time that Svitolina will be facing the Chinese player Wang Yafan and she should better prepared than the last time they played. Yafan blitzed past Svitolina in that one earlier this year in Miami, winning that second round match in straight sets.

Patchy Form Since US Open for Svitolina

Since making it to the semi-final at the US Open where Svitolina finally went down to Serena Williams, she has faced a few road-bumps. Although that hasn’t led to a downfall on the WTA Rankings, three early to early-ish defeats in successive tournaments would hurt.

After a bye at Zhengzhou Open, she won one match in three sets before going down to Kristina Mladenovic and then lost in the second round at Guangzhou. Svitolina got another opening bye at Wuhan and did well to defeat Garbine Muguruza and Svetlana Kuznetsova but again, a shock quarter-final loss followed.

Even here at the China Open first round, Svitolina was stretched to three sets by Anastasija Sevastova, after losing the opening in a tie-breaker. Big question now for Svitolina is not just about how she goes about her business in this match but whether the long periods of consistencies can be maintained in this tournament.

Can Yafan Make it Two in Two?

The 6-1, 6-2 demolition of little-known Xinyu Wang might not have said a lot about Yafan’s performance but her previous two tournament results have shown a turnaround in her form.

An open round win at Wuhan was followed by a fighting defeat to Sloane Stephens after she had made it to the semifinals at Seoul. These two results plus Yafan defending nothing after losing in the opening round last China Open have already combined to push her up to her career-best ranking at 48th.

However, defeating Svitolina for the second time in the same year would be too much to expect. What would be a more realistic option is for the Chinese woman to stretch to her a third.

Svitolina v Yafan Tips & Predictions

Svitolina starts off a solid favourite at 10/29 to win this but it’s the sets market we are looking at in this one. Three sets in the match sounds like a very realistic option and that’s at 8/5 for it to happen. For the bigger brave-hearts, could be a Svitolina win in three sets.

Tip: Three sets in the match 8/5 at 888Sport
