Belinda Bencic v Venus Williams Head to Head
This will be the sixth time that Bencic and Venus Williams will be facing off on the WTA circuit and the American leads 4-1 on head to head before this. This includes four straight wins for Venus Williams between 2012 and 2015, before Bencic finally got the better of her opponent in the first round of the 2018 Australian Open.
Bencic Breaks Back into Top 10
A semifinal at the US Open earlier this year allowed Bencic to make it back into the top 10 of the WTA rankings, her best of the season after having been 55th at one stage this year. And while the high of making it that far at the final major was tempered by an opening match loss at Wuhan Open last week, her confidence shouldn’t have take much of a dent.
Bencic has a 23-11 win-loss record on hard courts this season, including a straight-set pounding of Su-wei Hsieh in the first round of the China Open earlier this week. A title win on the hard court surface of Dubai – where the resurrection began for the Swiss – and another last-four stage appearance at the Indian Wells Open should all combine to give her a boost going up against her nemesis in this one.
Venus Williams, at her best, could still trouble Bencic but the big question is whether the American is really at that stage of her career anyway?

Is Venus Williams at Her Best?
And when we are talking about her best, we aren’t referring to those glory days of her Grand Slam triumphs but more so in the more recent times. Her best performance this year itself was a quarter-final at the Indian Wells Open, and more recently, Venus Williams also made it to the same stage in Cincinnati.
Venus Williams needed three sets to get past Barbora Strycova in her opening round match at this China Open too in what turned out to be a thriller. Down 3-5 in the final set, Williams converted three of the four break points she got to complete the victory.
At the end of the match Venus made a telling comment on her strategy. She said: “My strategy is always basically to dominate. Basically, whoever does that usually wins.” Would she be able to repeat that against Bencic? The bookmakers don’t seem to think so.
