Novak Djokovic v Lucas Pouille Head to Head

The pair have played each other twice before, with both matches coming this year. Djokovic won their Australian Open semi-final in January, and their later meeting at the Cincinnati Masters in August.

Djokovic Showing No Sign of Shoulder Injury

The big question for the world number one coming into this tournament is would he feel any ill-effects from the shoulder injury that forced him to retire from his fourth round match with Stan Wawrinka at Flushing Meadows and derailed his chances of winning his third Grand Slam of the year?

The evidence so far this week is that all appears to be in order, and that he should be fully fit for the challenges to come beyond this tournament, including the Masters Series events in Shanghai and Paris, and the ATP finals in London.

He began the tournament with a straight sets win over the Australian Alexei Popyrin on Tuesday, and then followed that up with another straights sets victory, local favourite, Go Soeda, on Wednesday.

Pouille, Melbourne Semi-Finalist

25 year old Pouille really made a name for himself at the start of the year, reaching the Australian Open semi-final before being beaten by his opponent on Friday.

That remains his best performance of 2019 to date on the senior tour, although he did win the Challenger even in May in Bordeaux. He has failed to add to his five senior career titles this year, although he did make the quarter-finals in Stuttgart and Cincinnati.

He began his week in Japan with a straight sets win over Hubert Hurkacz of Poland in the first round, and then, like Djokovic, beat a Japanese opponent in the second round, triumphing over Yoshito Nishioka, again in straight sets.

Djokovic v Pouille Predictions & Tips

Djokovic is the overwhelming favourite to win this match at 1/7, whilst Pouille is priced at 6/1. This will be the third time these two men have played each other this year, and, given that Pouille has yet to take a set off the Serb, it is difficult to see beyond a straightforward win for Djokovic.

Tip: Djokovic to win in  straight sets: 4/9 (888Sport)
