Karen Khachanov v Fabio Fognini Head to Head

Khachanov and Fognini have played just once in their careers. The meeting came about a week back at the China Open quarterfinals, which was won by Khachanov in three sets.

Khachanov Steady After Slow Start

Khachanov started the season off a little slowly. After a run to the third round at the Australian Open, he lost three opening matches in three consecutive ATP events. He managed to put together a run at the Indian Wells Masters where he was beaten in the quarterfinals by Rafael Nadal. The Russian’s form dipped again drastically; this time around he lost the four opening matches of the next four ATP tournaments, including the Miami Masters and Monte Carlo Masters.

The 23-year-old gained some confidence back with a run to the round of 16 at the Rome Masters, beating Roberto Bautista-Agut to get his Australian Open revenge. He fared very well at Roland Garros after that, beating the likes of Juan Martin del Potro en route the quarterfinals, where he lost to Dominic Thiem.

His run in Wimbledon was stopped in the round of 32 by Bautista-Agut again. Khachanov went on to reach the semifinals of the Montreal Masters, where his run was halted by Daniil Medvedev. After losing in the first round of US Open, he has since gained some confidence back by reaching the semifinals at the China Open.

Fognini Recovers From A Bad Start To Season

Fognini started off his season with a horrible run in the first few months. He reached the round of 32 at Australian Open, where he too was beaten by Buatista-Agut.

After that he managed to win just one match in the next six ATP tournaments he played, including the Indian Wells Masters and Miami Masters. In typical Fognini fashion, his from was of little consequence once he found his touch on the court. He completely turned around his season with an astonishing run to the title at Monte Carlo Masters.

This marked the first Masters 1000 title of his career. He beat many good clay court players like Alexander Zverev, Giles Simon and Borna Coric; but most notably, he defeated Rafael Nadal in the semifinals as well. This title helped him reach his career-best ranking of No. 9 in the following months.

The Italian came into Roland Garros as one of the players to watch with a decent run to the round of 16 at both the Madrid Masters and Rome Masters. Zverev sent him packing in the round of 16 at the French Open. He looks in good touch once again having reached the quarterfinals of China Open and now beating Andy Murray in a tight and controversial match in the second round of Shanghai Masters.

Khachanov v Fognini Tips and Predictions

Khachanov will be a slight favourite in this match-up. The Russian has the slight edge, having won their first ever meeting just last week at the China Open. It was by no means an easy victory, and Fognini made Khachanov sweat for it.

Fognini is, as always, a dark horse. It would be folly to write him off before he starts playing. He can be absolutely brilliant on his day and can defeat the best of the best on such days. Expect a high-intensity match with big shots all over the court. This is one match that won’t fail to deliver on entertainment.

Tip: Khachanov to win in straight sets: 11/10 with 888Sport
