Medvedev Favourite to Go All the Way in Shanghai
Since the second week of August, Daniil Medvedev has not lost a single match against any player on tour other than Rafael Nadal. The Russian is going through a purple patch at the moment, and apart from winning the Cincinnati Open & St Petersburg Open, he has also reached the finals at the Montreal Masters and the US Open.
His record since Wimbledon is extremely impressive at 25-3. After going out in the second round last year in Shanghai, this year, he is one of the favorites to lift the title.
Having already qualified for the season-ending World Tour Finals in London and have taken two weeks off after a hectic hard court season, signs are ominous for his opponents this week, especially considering there will be no Rafael Nadal for him to deal with. He brushed aside Great Britain’s Cameron Norrie in straight sets in the first round and while he said he wasn’t invincible, he sure looks like that these days.

Coming back from a career-threatening back injury last year, this will be only the 16th match for the Canadian this year. Once ranked as high as 25 in the world, his current ranking is 248 in the world. Even though his performances have been understandably inconsistent since his comeback, he gave glimpses of his talent during the US Open, where he took out Karen Khachanov, the world number nine player.
This week he has come through the qualifying rounds and has so far won all his matches in straight sets. That also includes a victory against world number 16 Diego Schwartzman.

Pospisil has shown glimpses of some of the old form that took him to world number 25 a couple of years ago. But Medvedev, on the other hand, has been in imperious form in the second half of the season. I can’t see anything else but a straight-sets victory for the Russian.
