Novak Djokovic v John Isner Head to Head

The pair have met eleven times before, with Djokovic holding a clear edge with nine wins to two. Isner’s two victories came at the Indian Wells Masters in 2012, and the Cincinnati Masters a year later, but Djokovic has won their last six meetings, the most recent of which came at the ATP Finals last November.

Djokovic Continuing Relentless Progress

Since his return from the shoulder injury that forced him to retire from his fourth round match with Stan Wawrinka at the US Open, Djokovic has been in relentless form, as if determined to make up for lost time. He won the Tokyo Open last week, cruising to his 76th career title without dropping a set, and looks to have carried his Japan form into China.

On Wednesday, he beat Canadian Denis Shapovalov in straight sets in an hour and eleven minutes, dominating on first serve, and conceding just one break point in the entire match. He also won three times more points on return of serve than his opponent.

He has already won this title more times – four – than anybody else in history, and, at this juncture, it is hard to see who there is in the field to stop him.

Isner’s Season Affected by Injury

Isner’s season has been affected by the injury he sustained in Miami in March, when trying to defend his Masters’ title in the final against Roger Federer.

That caused him to miss the entire European clay court season and, although he returned in time for Wimbledon, he was beaten in the second round. He did win his 15th career title at Newport Beach, but then went on a run of tournaments – Atlanta, Washington, Montreal and Cincinnati – where he lost early in the event.

After reaching the third round at Flushing Meadows, he suffered another early exit in Chengdu, before bouncing back last week in Beijing, where he reachd the quarter-finals.

He started this week well though, defeating Alex de Minaur, winner in Zhuhai, and then Lucas Pouille of France, both in straight sets.

Djokovic v Isner Predictions & Tips

Djokovic is the overwhelming odds-on favourite to win this match at 2/13, whilst Isner is priced at 6/1. It has been more than six years since the American has beaten the Serb, and to expect him to end that sequence on Thursday is a tall order, given the current form of Djokovic.

Tip: Djokovic to win in straight sets: 4/9 (888Sport)
