Andy Murray v Marius Copil Head to Head

The pair have met twice before, on the clay of Madrid in 2017, and the hard courts of Washington a year later. Murray won on both occasions, although he did have to come from a set down to win their second match on a third set tie-break.

Murray, First Quarter-Final Since Injury

Having achieved his first ATP senior win in 16 months on Tuesday by beating Belgian wildcard Kimmer Coppejans, Murray promptly followed that up with his second, a more straightforward victory over the Uruguayan Pablo Cuevas., securing a break in each set to wrap the match up.

Now he faces the possibility of reaching his first semi-final since his career threatening hip injuries, ironically in what is likely to be his final tournament of the year, as he prepares to be at home with his heavily pregnant wife.

Still if he can get past Copil, then he can derive some satisfaction that the effort involved in his comeback has been worthwhile, and there may be greater rewards in store for the former world number one in 2020.

Copil, Rare Quarter Final Appearance for Romanian

World number 93 Copil is best known for his powerful and consistent serve. The 29 year old Romanian has been in two ATP career finals, and lost them both – the Sofia Open and the Swiss Indoor Championships in 2018. He did, though, back in 2015, win the doubles’ event at his home tournament, the Romanian Open, with his partner Adrian Ungar.

This year he had played a lot of tennis, but it is a measure of how little success he has had that this match represents his first senior quarter-final of the year, although he did make the semi-final of the Challenger event in Surbiton.

He has had to battle to get here. First, he had to get through two rounds of qualifying even to make the main draw, beating local player Ruben Bemelmans, and then Antoine Hoang of France, both in straight sets.

Having got that far, he has taken full advantage of his opportunity. First he beat the Uruguayan Federico Delbonis, ranked some 16 places above him in the world, in straight sets. And then he had, arguably, his best result of the year, beating the Argentine number three seed, Diego Schwartzman in a tight three set contest, decided by a tie break.

Murray v Copil Predictions & Tips

Murray is the overwhelming favourite to win this match at 8/25, whilst Copil is priced at 47/20. The Romanian qualifier is enjoying his best run at any tournamet this year, but Murray will be determined to sign off his season in style, and will what to stay in this event as long as possible.
