Stan Wawrinka v Jannik Sinner Head to Head

The pair have played each other once before, and that was in the first round of the US Open barely two months ago, Wawrinka winning a first round encounter in four sets.

Wawrinka, Set for Second Final this Year

It is a measure of the extent that his career has been blighted by injury in recent times that it has been two years since Wawrinka, three times a Grand Slam winner, claimed the last of his 16 ATP tour victories. That was on the clay of Geneva in 2017 but, being the highest ranked player left in the competition, he will feel that he may not have a better chance of adding to that haul, having lost his previous final earlier this year in Rotterdam.

Not that it has been easy for the 34 year old Swiss player this week. He had an epic battle with the Spanish veteran Feliciano Lopez in the second round, which Wawrinka finally won on a third-set tie break.

Then Gilles Simon gave him another top challenge in their quarter-final on Friday, fighting back from dropping the first set to level the match in the second, before Wawrinka was able to finally pull away in the third.

Wildcard Sinner in Unchartered Waters

18 year old wildcard Sinner is now in completely unchartered waters, having never before been past the second round at a senior ATP event. However, he is used to breaking records having, earlier this year, become the first man, not only to make the final of a Challenger event, which he did in Bergamo, Italy, but also to win it.

This week he has produced a string of impressive performances in Antwerp. He began by beating the Polish wildcard entrant Kamil Majchrzak in straight sets in the first round. Then he achieved the best result of his young career to date, dumping the number one seed Gael Monfils out of the tournament for the loss of just five games.

And he then produced another fine performance in his quarter final with Frances Tiafoe, a man some sixty places higher than him in the world rankings, winning in three sets to book his place in the semis.

Wawrinka v Sinner Predictions & Tips

Wawrinka is the odds-on favourite to win this match at 1/2, whilst Sinner is priced at 24/13. It has been a breakthrough week for the young Italian wildcard, but playing a man who beat him only two months ago, and has his own reasons for desperately wanting to win the title here, his run is likely to come to an end.

Tip: Wawrinka to win in straight sets: 1/1 (888Sport)
