Denis Shapovalov v Filip Krajinovic Head to Head

The pair have never met each other on tour. This will be the first clash between the two.

Shapovalov on the Hunt for his Maiden ATP Tour Title

Denis Shapovalov entered his semifinal match against Japanese lucky loser Yuichi Sugita with an appalling record in tour-level semifinal matches. He was 0-7, with three of those defeats coming this year and each time to the eventual champion. However, the eighth time was indeed a charm as Shapovalov eased his way into his first tour-level final with a convincing 7-5 6-2 win.

The young Canadian has accomplished plenty in his young career, including a career-high ranking of No.20 as well as two victories against top-10 opponents.

The 20-year-old’s steady start to the 2019 season caught the eyes of many, and he exploded at the Miami Masters where he reached the semifinals. But Shapovalov would go through a lengthy spell when he struggled to win matches. He managed only four wins between Monte Carlo in mid April and Cincinnati in August. He has changed that narrative with his sizzling form in the autumn.

Since losing to Gael Monfils in the third round of the US Open, Shapovalov has reached the semifinals in Chengdu and now his first final in Stockholm.

Krajinovic Also Seeking A First Title

Filip Krajinovic is also aiming to win his first career ATP title this weekend, but he has been on this journey before, unlike Shapovalov.

Krajinovic rose to fame when he sensationally reached the final of the Rolex Paris Masters at the end of the 2017 season as a qualifier. Although he lost out to American Jack Sock in the championship match, it was a run that took him inside the top-40. However, Krajinovic failed to build on that magical week in Bercy with injuries derailing his 2018 season and subsequent drop in the rankings.

The Serbian World No.60 seems to have found his powers of recovery and made a second trip to his second career final in Budapest earlier this year, but fell short as he lost to big serving Italian Matteo Berrettini.

Krajinovic will now attempt to win his first title at the third time of asking, and with 27 tour wins in 2019 (a career high for him), he should be buoyed to get over the finish line.

Shapovalov v Krajinovic Predictions & Tips

There is very little to separate these two and the fact that this is a first meeting makes it even more intriguing and tough to call. Something has to give and we are guaranteed a new ATP title winner. Krajinovic has had a slightly more treacherous run to the final with the quality of opposition faced and that could actually be good for him. But Shapovalov, who is bound to experience a few nerves in his first final, will take centre stage with a tidy performance.

Tip: Shapovalov to win in three sets: 5/2 10/11 with 888Sport
