Elise Mertens v Maria Sakkari Head to Head
The head to head tally currently stands at 3-3 between the two players. They have been meeting each other on the tour since 2014 and have always been fairly competitive. Their most recent match took place in Rabat this season, where Sakkari sailed to a comfortable victory in straight sets.
Mertens, Hoping to End the Year on a High Note
The 23-year-old Belgian Elise Mertens started the season as World No. 12 and for a while, it appeared that she would comfortably crack the top 10. She won the Qatar Open in February, defeating some big names like Simona Halep, Kiki Bertens, and Angelique Kerber in the process. However, Mertens failed to build on that impressive run thereafter as she moved on to lose in the early rounds in the subsequent tournaments.
Indian Wells, Miami, Stuttgart, Madrid – she had an uneventful time on the tour over grass and clay and as a result, soon dropped out of the top 20. However, she found a lot of reprieve in the US Open, where she reached the quarterfinal. Plus, in the doubles half, she won the title partnered with Aryna Sabalenka, delivering her best performance of the season.
She followed that with a semifinal run in Osaka although, once again, Mertens fell in the same rut and lost early in Wuhan, Beijing, and most recently, Luxembourg.

Sakkari, Starts with a Loss
Maria Sakkari started her campaign in Zhuhai with a straight-set loss over Sabalenka in the opener. In a match that lasted for an hour and 19 minutes, the Greek lost 6-3, 6-4. With two more matches to go in the robin round, this one is a must-win game for Sakkari.
Following a decent performance this season, where she became World No. 22 and won her maiden singles title in the Morocco Open, the 24-year-old is primed to be a top 20 player in the coming seasons. She has shown a great deal of promise although, she continues to battle with a lot of inconsistency.
For instance, in Rome, she reached the semifinal as a qualifier but in the following events, she barely made it past the early rounds. Similarly, in Moscow last week, she fell to Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, right in the opener. With a win-loss tally of 31-20, most of her season is marked by such instances.
Mertens v Sakkari Predictions & Tips
This is a close match to call. The two ladies are certainly talented and have been fairly impressive over the course of the year. In the end, it will all come down to the day and how they are feeling. For the time being, expect Mertens to start with the odds in her favour, simply because of the fairly superior year she has had in comparison to Sakkari.
