Matteo Berrettini v Grigor Dimitrov Head to Head

This will be the second time that Matteo Berrettini and Grigor Dimitrov will be facing off at this level and the previous meeting had also come this year. It was at the Monte-Carlo Masters and Dimitrov had won that one in straight sets.

US Open Semi-Finalist Berrettini in a Brilliant Year

Berrettini had begun the season outside the top 50 on the ATP Rankings chart, but has soared up on the back of some excellent performances on clay. He was a title winner at Budapest and then made the final at Munich where he went down to Christian Garin.

Later, as if to prove he is no one-trick pony, Berrettini also clinched his second ATP title of the season on grass, winning the Stuttgart Open. That included a win over Karen Khachanov and Nick Kyrgios.

However, the Italian’s best performance came at the US Open earlier this year where he made the semifinal before going down to Rafael Nadal in a fighting three-setter. A hard-fought victory over Gael Monfils in that tournament would have been a shot in his arms and it’s propelled him to his career-best number 11 on the ATP circuit.

Dimitrov Aiming for a Safe Year-End Landing

In what has been a struggling past two seasons for Dimitrov, the Bulgarian has gone from a career-high of number three in the world to 78th earlier this year. It was his worst-ever ranking in seven years of tennis and for someone who has often been called Baby Fed for his potential, that would have been heart-breaking.

The comeback isn’t fully complete but Dimitrov will be pleased he has moved into the top 30 now. Another couple of solid performances, here at Vienna and the Paris Masters, would help him climb the ladder even further given he’s not defending too many points at either competitions.

He was a first round loser at Vienna last year and just made the second round in Paris. Dimitrov was a 6-3, 7-5 winner over Damir Dzumhur in his first round match here but this one against Berrettini would be anything but a straightforward match. Sure even he had a semifinal to show at the US Open for his efforts but would that be enough?

The good news is that when in form, Dimitrov loves playing indoors, having won 15 of his 18 matches at this surface in 2017.

Matteo Berrettini v Grigor Dimitrov Predictions & Tips

Berrettini is a favourite here, with an offer of 8/15 for his win but expecting Dimitrov to spring a surprise in this one. Backing the Bulgarian to edge this contest.
