Roger Federer v Alex De Minaur Head to Head

This is the first meeting the two players, making it unchartered territory for both players.

De Minaur in Fourth Final of 2019

It has been a sensational year for the young Aussie, Alex De Minaur. At 20 years of age, he has won three ATP 250 titles this year, at Sydney, Atlanta and Zhuhai. Ranked 28th in the world at the moment, the Aussie can expect to be ranked higher when the new ratings are released next Monday, with the impressive run he has had this week in Basel.

De Minaur also had a career best second week showing at the US Open this year, defeating top ten Kei Nishikori en route, before losing to Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov in the semi-finals. The Aussie remains a frontrunner at the ATP Next Gen Finals in Milan next month.

The 20-year-old came through a tough semi-final against American Reilly Opelka, who has also had the best year of his career, in a three-setter. With precision on his serve, and a good all round game to back it up, De Minaur has shown promise since a very young age, and is earmarked as the future of the men’s sport in the years to come.

Federer Eyes Tenth Basel Title

Nine time Basel winner Roger Federer is in his 13th consecutive and 15th overall final, as he won his 23rd consecutive match on the Center Court here. A win here would be a 103rd ATP title for the Swiss maestro, as he inches closer to the record 109 titles of Jimmy Connors.

Federer, who has overall had a good year, is in his sixth ATP final of the year, winning titles in Dubai, Madrid and Halle, and being runner-up at the Indian Wells Masters 1000, and Wimbledon. With his three titles in the first half of the season, followed by a disappointing loss to Novak Djokovic at Wimbledon, where the Swiss had two championship points on his serve, a title at Basel would serve the Swiss well, who has been dealt more losses than he is used to, in the second half of the year.

The top seed has been in vintage form this week, losing only six games in the first two rounds, followed by a stellar performance against rising Greek star Stefano Tsitsipas in the semi-finals in straight sets.

Roger Federer v Alex De Minaur Predictions & Tips

While Federer begins as a favorite here, he will know not to be complacent against young De Minaur, who has consistently been in good form for most of this year. Expect De Minaur to provide a stern challenge to the nine time champion, but it is Basel and it is Roger Federer; it is difficult to not envision him winning Basel #10.

Tip: Federer to win in two sets. 5/18 at 888Sport
