Diego Schwartzman v Kyle Edmund Head to Head

The pair have met three times before, with Schwartzman leading their head to head series by two matches to one. The Argentine won their first meeting in the Rogers Cup last year, and their most recent encounter at the Monte Carlo Masters in April. Sandwiched in between those matches, Edmund won at the Vienna Open last October.

Schwartzman, Beaten Finalist in Vienna

Schwartzman has enjoyed a reasonably successful year, reaching three finals. He lost the first in front of his home fans in Argentina in February, but then went to win the tournament at Los Cabos in Mexico in  August. That was not only his third ATP singles title, but his first victory on a surface other than his favourite surface of clay, a sign of his development into an all-court player.

He underlined that form with his run to the final in Vienna last week, and, although he lost in the end, he performed valiantly, pushing home favourite Dominic Thiem close before losing in three sets.

2019 a Year to Forget for Edmund

2019 is not a year that Edmund will look back on with any fondness. Starting the year in the world’s top twenty, he has slid inexorably down the rankings as his form has deserted him. From being an automatic entrant in tournaments, he is now having to pre-qualify for many events.

He has also lost his British number one status, with both Dan Evans and Cameron Norrie overtaking him in the standings.

He did win the Challenger event in Indian Wells, reached the semi-finals in Eastbourne, and was a quarter finalist in Washington. But they have been rare bright spots among many disappointments.

However, by beating Ricardas Berankis of Lithuania in the first round in straight sets on Tuesday, he has at least equalled his previous best performance at this Masters event from two years ago.

Schwartzman v Edmund Predictions & Tips

Schwartzman is the heavy odds-on favourite to win this match at 5/8, whilst Edmund is priced at 6/4. The odds reflect the relative form of the two men – Schwartzman is buoyed by his performance in Vienna last week, whilst Edmund will be keen to draw the curtain on what has been a disappointing season. The Argentine should win easily.

Tip: Schwartzman to win in straight sets: 6/4 at 888Sport
