Belinda Bencic v Kiki Bertens Head to Head

WTA Finals debutant Belinda Bencic is yet to win a contest against last year’s semifinalist Kiki Bertens. The 27-year-old Dutchwoman has won all their three encounters, winning on the Hard Courts of Indian Wells and Wuhan in 2017 and 2018 respectively and on her preferred clay court in Stuttgart earlier this year.

Bencic Guaranteed to Advance with a Win

Belinda Bencic, who blew away a set advantage in her first-ever WTA Finals match against another debutant Ashleigh Barty, made amends in the second match of the round robin phase, defeating Petra Kvitova 6-3, 1-6, 6-4 in a fascinating contest that lasted an hour and 47 minutes.

The 22-year-old Swiss star’s first ever victory at the WTA Finals has kept her hopes alive in the tournament and a win against Bertens on Thursday would guarantee her a spot in the semifinals, irrespective of other scenarios in the group.

Bencic could also progress with a three-set defeat to Bertens if Kvitova beats Barty in three and the Swiss edges past Barty and Kvitova on higher percentage of games won tiebreak.

A deeper run in the tournament will be a perfect ending to the season for the U.S. Open semifinalist, who has enjoyed a breakthrough season, having won titles in Dubai and Kremlin and broken into the top 10. Her astronomical rise in the sport could also be attributed to the influence that Swiss legend Roger Federer has had on her game. Bencic had kick-started the year by defending the Hopman Cup title with Federer.

Virtual Knockout for Bertens

Bencic’s next opponent is the one she edged past in race to Shenzhen.

Bertens came very close to qualification, but a quarterfinal exit in Kremlin damaged her chances and when the eventual Kremlin Cup winner Bencic reached the final it meant the former would miss the bus to Shenzhen.

Naomi Osaka’s injury, however, allowed Bertens to compete as an alternate and she made most of the opportunity, bouncing back from a set down to upset Barty 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. The win has given the World No. 10 a chance to qualify for the WTA Finals semis for the second year in a row.

To advance from the group stage, Bertens will have to win against Bencic. She will top the group if Kvitova beats Barty, or finish second if the Aussie wins. A loss to Bencic will end Bertens’ campaign.
