Defending Champion Svitolina on Fire

The only undefeated player in the 2019 WTA Finals looks determined to cap off one of the best years of her career by defending her title in Shenzhen. The 25-year-old Ukrainian who was given little chance to lift the title in 2018, had stunned all by winning the trophy in Singapore without losing a single match. Picking up from where she left last year, Svitolina has won all three of her group matches, with second alternate Sofia Kenin being her latest victim, whom she beat 7-5, 7-6 (12-10) in her last group match on Friday.

What’s been different for Svitolina at Shenzhen compared to Singapore? She hasn’t dropped a single set in the round robin phase, and despite being involved in a couple of tense tie-breakers, she has always come out on top. 2019 Wimbledon and U.S. Open semifinalist, Svitolina had to endure a tough first match against No. 2 Karolina Pliskova, but the World No. 8 found a way past the 27-year-old Czech, winning 7-6 (14-12), 6-4.

In her next contest, Svitolina finally got a bit of revenge against Romanian Simona Halep, who had beaten the Ukrainian at the Wimbledon and Doha semifinals earlier this year. Svitolina won 7-5, 6-3 to seal a semifinal berth, before topping American Kenin on Friday and maintaining a perfect record.

Bencic’s Stellar 2019 Gets Even Better

Up next for the Ukrainian is one of the most improved players of 2019, Belinda Bencic, who booked a spot in the semifinal after last year’s semifinalist and the first alternate in this year’s tournament Kiki Bertens pulled out midway of an intriguing contest on the final day of Red Group’s round robin matches. The No. 7 ranked Bencic was up 7-5, 1-0 when the Dutchwoman withdrew from the match.

WTA Finals debutant Bencic enters the semifinals with two back-to-back wins in the tournament. Having started the tournament with a three-set defeat to eventual Red Group winner Ashleigh Barty, Bencic outlasted Petra Kvitova in a three-set thriller in her next match, before advancing to semis in her final group match after Bertens pulled out. Not the way the Swiss wanted to progress but she was overjoyed to have made it this far in a punishing season-ending tournament, which has already seen three withdrawals due to injuries.

As the gruelling season comes to an end, the last three elimination matches will test the mental and physical strength of the four remaining women and the one who turns out to be the toughest of all will be the best-placed to be crowned the champion on Sunday.

Can Bencic stop Svitolina in semis? It will be a very tight contest, but the Ukrainian would want it more badly for two reason. One, because she han’t won a trophy this year, and two, because she would still be hurting from that semifinal exit in the Dubai Tennis Championships in February.

She had entered the tournament as two-time defending champion and was playing flawlessly until she ran into the unseeded Swiss, who ended the Ukrainian’s bid for a hat-trick of titles, and eventually went on to win the tournament. Svitolina faces a similar situation in Shenzhen, trying to defend her title but standing on her way in the semis is the same opponent who dethroned her in Dubai.

Elina Svitolina v Belinda Bencic Predictions & Tips

It’s survival of the fittest. Both will come in with bruised and battered bodies, but looking at this tournament’s form, Svitolina will have a slight edge. She has the capacity to tire opponents by engaging them in long rallies and then quickly switching on her aggressive mode, and will most likely be looking to do the same on Saturday. She is yet to drop a set in the tournament and will be desperate not to end 2019 without a trophy. Expect her to win in three.
