Roger Federer v Matteo Berrettini Head to Head

The pair have played each other once before, in the last sixteen of Wimbledon earlier this year, Federer winning in straight sets for the loss of just five games.

Opening Match Defeat for Federer

For the second year in a row in London, Federer lost his opening group game, the difference being that, this time last year, it was at the hands of Kei Nishikori, whilst, this time round he went down to the world number five Dominic Thiem.

What will frustrate the Swiss six-time champion is that his defeat to the Austrian was partially self-inflicted, as he permitted his levels to drop at crucial periods of the match, allowing unforced errors to creep into his game.

He began poorly, losing his opening service game, but although he levelled soon afterwards, a string of mistakes off the racquet gave Thiem the chance to break once again when the score was 5-5, which the Austrian duly took to serve out for the set.

He had a chance to break the Thiem serve early in the second set, but the Austrian save himself with an excellent running forehand, and, thereafter, Federer was always struggling to hold his own serve. He eventually surrendered it in the eleventh game, with another string of loose shots, and Thiem was able to serve out for the match in the following game.

Berrettini’s Disappointing Debut against Djokovic

This is the first time that the 23-year old has qualified for the ATP Finals, and, perhaps overcome by nerves and a little overawed to find himself in such august company, he failed to do himself justice in his opening match against the number two seed Novak Djokovic on Sunday afternoon, winning just three games in a match that lasted barely an hour.

Whilst he regularly served at over 130 miles an hour, he had great difficulty holding it against a man who was playing near the top of his game – two service breaks in the first set, and three in the second tells its own story, as do the statistics that he won just 47% of the points on his first serve, and only 33% on his second serve.

He will be keen give a better account of himself in what remains of the tournament, although that heavy defeat means that any chance he had of reaching the knock-out stages is probably already gone.

Federer v Berrettini Predictions & Tips

Federer is the favourite to win this match at 3/14, whilst Berrettini is priced at 75/19. This is a must win match for both men – victory is vital to keep any hopes of reaching the semi-finals alive for the pair of them. Based on their only previous meeting, which also came in London, the Swiss is likely to win easily. That match was played on the grass of Wimbledon, but the switch to a hard court should make no difference to the likely outcome of this match..

Tip: Federer to win in straight sets: 4/7 (Click here to get these odds with Unibet)
