Novak Djokovic v Stefanos Tsitsipas Head to Head

It’s a rivalry that one might hear a lot about in the times to come. Stefanos Tsitsipas, courtesy the season he had in 2019, has had a lot of tennis fans talking of a potential takeover from the Big Three, and he certainly deserves a lot of that praise. Over the four matches he has played against Djokovic, he has won two, including a Shanghai Masters win in 2019.

That said, Djokovic’s two wins over the Greek came in 2019 and both were in straight sets, showing Tsitsipas who was the boss.

Was Djokovic in Full Gear in 2019?

The answer to that, probably, is no, he wasn’t. Funnily though, he won 60 of the matches he played in 2019, and lost just 12, much better than his own 54-13 win-loss record in 2018. His peak, obviously, came in 2015 when he was winning everything and ended the year on 84-7.

So no, Djokovic didn’t give an impression he was in full gear but how does anyone argue against two Grand Slam titles and three others including two Masters. And how does one argue against a player winning on all surfaces – two titles on hard court, and one apiece on clay, indoor and grass.

Djokovic is also coming off three successive singles wins at the Davis Cup but what would rankle is the two defeats at the backend of the ATP Finals, where he went down to Dominic Thiem and Roger Federer. On the back of a Paris Masters title victory just before that, favourite Djokovic went tumbling out of that competition to end the ATP season on a kind of an unexpected low.

It was Tsitsipas’ best year, 2019, one which propelled him to fifth in the ATP Rankings before settling in on the sixth spot at the end of the year. This included a victory at the ATP Finals, a win that saw him defeat Daniil Medvedev, Alexander Zverev and Roger Federer before that victory over Dominic Thiem in the final.

That victory over Federer was no fluke either. He had announced himself to the world at the start of the year with a fourth round win over Federer at the Australian Open too, and then defeated Djokovic and Rafael Nadal (and on clay too) in the year. Ending the year with 60 wins to 28 defeats, Tsitsipas threw his name in the hat, a hat that has a few others as well who are all in line to become the first non-Big Three players aiming to win a Grand Slam title in a long time.

What will be interesting to see if Tsitsipas can kick-start things in the manner he had left off. There’s always that fear of the second-season syndrome, and while he was an easy winner over Andrey Rublev in his previous winner, Djokovic will be the real test.

Although Tsitsipas has won two of the four matches he has played against the Serb, a fully fit Djokovic should prove to be too strong. Question is if Djokovic is fully fit, which one supposes one will know soon enough. For now, going ahead with Djokovic to win this one.
