Novak Djokovic v Kevin Anderson Head to Head

In 11 previous matches, Djokovic has won nine of them and his only two defeats have come at the Laver Cup of 2018 and in their very first meeting at the Miami Masters way back in 2008. In 2019, their only match came at the Mubadala Tennis Championships where Djokovic needed three difficult sets to overcome his opponent.

Slightly Slow Start for Djokovic this Season

No, exhibition tournaments aren’t the best judge of a player’s form but for one who has topped most of such tournaments, losing Stefanos Tsitsipas in Mubadala wouldn’t have been a pleasant experience. More so because Djokovic could well be challenged by the Greek over months and years to come.

That said, there’s only so much attention one can pay to tournaments that have no ATP ranking points associated with it and are more so used as preparation and rustiness-removers. The ATP Cup, on the other hand, isn’t just about representing the country – which by itself is a huge motivation. There are points on offer too.

Djokovic’s bigger worry will be his elbow and how that turns out through the rest of season. A clinical victory or two to begin with against the top players should help ease the initial worry for sure.

Anderson Looking to Ease Back from Injury-Hit 2019

If Djokovic’s 2019 ended with worries about a resurfacing elbow injury, Kevin Anderson’s fitness issues have been even more worrisome. Ranked sixth at the start of the 2019 season, Anderson begins 2020 down to 91st in the world and this is thanks to his injury struggles which saw him play just 20 matches in the entire previous season.

He showed enough class to win the Pune Open last season but after that things went rather kaput for him. A Miami Masters quarterfinal followed but after his third round exit at the 2019 Wimbledon, Anderson opted out of the rest of the year to nurse his knee injury. Earlier there were elbow issues which saw him take a break mid-season.

Anderson has warned he is fully fit now and will be raring to go from the very first match with his new coach Diego Moyano around as well. Well, fitness from injury is one thing but having not played a single competitive match since that Wimbledon exit, would be quite another thing for his match fitness.

Especially playing against the world number two.

Novak Djokovic v Kevin Anderson Predictions & Tips

Anderson is a fighter and expect nothing short of that from him, but Djokovic should not have too many problems getting past the South African in this one. Not surprising then to see Djokovic start off 1/10 to win this one.

Tip: Djokovic to win in straight sets: 1/3 (Click here to get these odds with bet365)
