Karolina Pliskova v Alison Riske Head to Head

This will be the ninth time that Pliskova and Riske will be going head to head in a match at the highest level. Pliskova holds a major advantage, having won seven and lost just one of their encounters. Riske’s only win had come in 2012 in an ITF tournament, while Pliskova defeated her twice in 2019 itself – in Dubai and Toronto.

Rusty Pliskova Finally Gets Some Match Practice

After an opening round bye, Pliskova showed rustiness in getting past her second round opponent Ajla Tomljanovic. She needed three sets, winning 6-4, 6-7, 6-1 to defeat the Aussie fan favourite. Interestingly, Pliskova made heavy weather of getting the better of her opponent despite having been in Australia for over 11 days now, having flown in early to get used to the conditions.

However, it was the lack of match practice that looked to have gotten the better of Pliskova, having not played a single pre-season match or a first round one before the Tomljanovic victory. Needing over two hours to get the better of Tomljanovic, and despite losing the second set, she reckoned she played a solid brand of tennis.

Having played Tomljanovic before this on multiple occasions including thrice last year, she had had no difficulty getting past her. And now she takes on Riske, against whom she has a similar record.

Riske in Form of Her Life

Since winning her maiden WTA title in 2014, Riske’s form had tapered away and the struggles were evident from her fall to 108th in the world on the WTA Rankings. However, it was in 2019 things changed for the good as she won 36 of her 60 matches including a title on grass and a couple of other finals – at Wuhan and Shenzhen – where she lost to Aryna Sabalenka.

Coming into 2020, she had suffered a couple of losses at the WTA Ellite competition but continued from where she had left off in 2019. What would please her particularly is not just she won back to back matches to set up this quarterfinal against Pliskova but the manner of wins.

In her first, Riske dropped six games in getting past Karolina Muchova and then crushed Barbora Strycova 6-3, 6-4 to swiftly move into the quarterfinal. Riske will also be glad she was able to defeat Strycova, who had overcome her on both previous occasions.

Karolina Pliskova v Alison Riske Predictions & Tips

We are looking at Pliskova starting off as a favourite to win this with an offer of 1/3 for her victory but Riske will smell an upset given her own form and the way Pliskova started off in the season. Expecting a tough fight, with Pliskova managing to edge out a win.
