Denis Shapovalov v Marton Fucsovics Head to Head

It will be a first career meeting between these two players.

Shapovalov Handed Tough Draw in Melbourne

Denis Shapovalov is the highest-ranked Canadian at this year’s Australian Open, seeded 13th and arriving in Melbourne at the peak of his game.

The 20-year-old will look to build on his fabulous second half of the 2019 season in which he clinched his maiden ATP tour-level title in Stockholm, and reached his first Masters 1000 final in Bercy where he lost to Novak Djokovic.

His best result at Grand Slam level is a fourth round showing at the 2017 US Open and he briefly entertained the idea of replicating that feat when he played Djokovic at the last edition of Australian Open, falling in four sets in the third round. Shapovalov was one of only two players to take a set off the Serb in Melbourne last year and he will be primed to go one better in 2020.

However, his path to the second week is certainly not the easiest by any stretch of imagination. He starts his campaign against the World No.66 Marton Fucsovics, and should he succeed, he could meet the highly talented Italian youngster Jannik Sinner in the second round. Grigor Dimitrov, a former semifinalist at Melbourne Park will likely loom in the third round before the potential fourth round meeting against Roger Federer.

Fucsovics Has Lost His Mojo and Confidence

Seven months ago, Marton Fucsovics peaked at a career-high ranking of World No.31 after reaching his second ATP tour final of his career in Sofia. He then made back-to-back quarterfinals in Rotterdam and Dubai to complete a very impressive first quarter of the 2019 season.

However, it was during the clay-court swing when the problems would begin. He was unsuccessful in his title defense in Geneva, losing in the first round to Federico Delbonis. As a result, his ranking took a massive hit and he dropped out of the World’s Top 50.

But the scant consolation for Fucsovics is that at No.66 in the World, he is the top-ranked Hungarian male player in the draw and in the Top 200 in the rankings.
