Felix Auger-Aliassime v Ernests Gulbis Head to Head

Auger-Aliassime and Gulbis have met once on tour and it was the young Canadian who came out on top in a straight-sets win in Stuttgart last year.

Auger-Aliassime Set For Melbourne Debut

Felix Auger-Aliassime has been under the microscope ever since he registered a main draw match-win on the ATP Challenger tour when he was only 14.

In 2019, the talented Canadian showed a cameo of his potential as he climbed from the Top 100 at the start of the year to a career-high ranking of World No.17.  He made three ATP tour finals: in Rio, Lyon and Stuttgart. Unfortunately for him he is still in pursuit of his maiden ATP title.

Auger-Aliassime’s achievements were eclipsed by only one male Canadian and it was Denis Shapovalov who collected a first title on tour and the mantle for the top-ranked Canadian in the rankings. The 19-year-old isn’t fazed though as he has made a fantastic start to 2020. He reached the semifinals in Adelaide where he lost to in-form Andrey Rublev in three sets.

Gulbis Came Through Qualifiers

Ernests Gulbis confirmed his place in the main draw after seeing off Indian’s Prajnesh Gunneswaran in the final round of qualifying on Friday.

The mercurial Latvian will now make his 10th appearance in the main draw of the first Grand Slam of the year, where he has reached the second round on two occasions. Gulbis is a six-time ATP tour champion, but the last of those titles came in 2014 – the same year he also achieved a career-best appearance in a slam when he reached the semifinals of French Open.

His ranking has plummeted in recent years and he posted a modest 6-17 record in 2019 across all tournaments.

Felix Auger-Aliassime v Ernests Gulbis Predictions & Tips

Auger-Aliassime is a massive favourite to win here and rightly so. It would be a massive shock if Gulbis can roll back the years and produce the upset of Day 2. But with all things considered including ranking and ability, the young Canadian should win comfortably.
