This will be the first time that Halep will be taking on the 173rd-ranked Harriet Dart at this level.
Halep Needs a Strong Performance
Sure, Halep won her first round match in straight sets, defeating Jennifer Brady 7-6, 6-1 to move into the second round. However, the world number three is coming off a second match defeat to Aryna Sabalenka at the Adelaide International and would be looking to garner confidence from these early matches before she gets to the business end of the tournament.
Halep did not just lose to Sabalenka. She also lost in straight sets in that quarterfinal, having earlier beaten Ajla Tomljanovic in the second round in Adelaide.
What makes things tougher for her is the manner in which she finished the previous season; Halep qualified for the WTA Finals but lost two of her three round-robin matches. Those defeats came at the hands of Elina Svitolina and Karolina Pliskova and then you add the Sabalenka loss, and it all could result in a major dent to the confidence.
