Angelique Kerber v Priscilla Hon Head to Head

This will be the first match between the world number 18 Kerber and the 139th-ranked Hon at this level of tennis.

Kerber’s Form Continues to Remain a Concern

A first round win in straight sets for Kerber should ease some of her recent concerns around her form, but she was playing a near-200th-ranked Elisabetta Cocciaretto in her opener. A 6-2, 6-2 win was par for the course even given how things had gone for Kerber in recent times.

The bigger test for the German, former world number one will come in the latter rounds but she will need to keep showing signs of improvement after the kind of 2019 she had. After winning three titles in 2018 including the Wimbledon, things have gone backward for Kerber, as she struggled through to a 33-19 win-loss record in 2019 without winning a single title other than the Hopman Cup.

Making it worse was her showing at the Grand Slams last season, with the fourth round at the Australian Open being her top performance. She was knocked out in the first round at the French Open and the US Open and entering Wimbledon as the defending champion, Kerber made just round two.

Hon Equalling Career-Best Showing

21-year-old Aussie Hon is 139th on the WTA Rankings chart, having fallen from her career-best of 118th, but in reaching the second round at the Australian Open she has equalled her career-best showing at a Grand Slam. Having made it to the second round at the French Open last season, she won the wildcard entry at her home competition here.

And in the first round, Hon was a 6-3, 6-4 winner over Kateryna Kozlova, a player ranked nearly 50 places ahead of her.

This came after a very poor start to the season for Hon, who lost in the first round at both, the Brisbane International and Adelaide International. At Brisbane, she was downed in three sets by fellow Aussie Ajla Tomljanovic while Adelaide saw her lose to Julia Goerges.

Which is why a win in her opener at Melbourne should be very morale-boosting even if it means she is now up against a former world number one.

Angelique Kerber v Priscilla Hon Predictions & Tips

Kerber is a favourite but could still be vulnerable given how things have gone for her recently. She starts at 1/5 to win this one but there is a good chance of this not being as straightforward as that and three sets in the match can be expected.
