Stan Wawrinka v Andreas Seppi Head to Head

This is a long-lasting rivalry, which has seen these two players face off in 16 matches before this. Wawrinka has won 11 of the 16 matches, including the last time they played in the fourth round of the 2016 Australian Open, winning in straight sets. Four of Seppi’s five wins have come on clay while the fifth came on grass, making it 11-0 for Wawrinka on indoor and outdoor hard courts.

Wawrinka Coming off a Fighting Win

He was expected to come through easily, having gone into his opening round match against Dami Dzumhur pegged at 1/7 to win the encounter. However, Wawrinka was made to fight for every point, especially in the first two sets of his opening round match which he split with Dzumhur.

Wawrinka then came back to win the next two, 6-4, 6-4 but his game looked far from perfect. And it wasn’t because of rustiness either, with the Swiss player having made it to the semifinal at the Doha Open in the lead-up to this tournament. After defeating Jeremy Chardy and Aljaz Bedene in straight sets in Qatar, he was up a set against Corentin Moutet but went down in three sets in that semifinal.

That said, Wawrinka has shown enough fight in his entire career including last year when he was ranked 68th at one time. He did not win a single title – he hasn’t since the Geneva Open in 2017 – but still managed to pull off some sterling performances to make the top 20.

Andreas Seppi Banks on Solid Australian Open Record

Seppi is a journeyman who is in the 20th year of his tennis career, and once ranked 18th in the world, he has now fallen to 85th. Which is why he went into his first round match against Miomir Kecmanovic as a rank outsider but played some of his best tennis in recent times to win it in straight sets.

That result came as a surprise after Seppi was 17/10 going into his opening round match, having struggled in the first two tournaments he played this year as well. He had a first round bye in the Canberra Challenger and lost in the second while winning in the first round at the Auckland Open before Kyle Edmund got the better of him in the second.

Interestingly, Seppi’s record at the Australian Open is a solid one, having made the fourth round on four separate occasions in the last seven editions and third round on two other occasions.

Stan Wawrinka v Andreas Seppi Predictions & Tips
