Kiki Bertens v Zarina Diyas Head to Head

The pair have met once before, in the second round at Osaka in Japan in 2015, Diyas winning in straight sets.

Bertens, Little Troubled So Far This Week

This is only the third time in nine attempts that Bertens has reached the third round in Melbourne in the singles, although she was a quarter-finalist in the women’s doubles here five years ago.

She has been hardly troubled so far this week, getting to this stage without dropping a set.

She began on Tuesday by brushing aside the challenge of the Romanian Irina-Camilia Begu, and although the Australian wildcard Arina Rodionova proved to be a stronger opponent, she overcame her and the partisan home crowd without undue alarm.

Now the going will start to get a little tougher for the Dutchwoman who has won 9 WTA events, including the biggest title of her career last year, the Premier Madrid Open.

Diyas Survived Two Battles in Melbourne

World number 73 Diyas is currently the third ranked Kazakh player after Elina Rybakina and Yulina Putintseva. She has won one WTA title, the Japan’s Women Open in 2017, but she has enjoyed recent success on the junior ITF tour, winning her ninth title earlier this month in Hong Kong.

This is the third time she has made the third round here, having previously achieved the feat in 2014 and 2015. However, she has had to work hard to earn her spot against Bertens. She began on Tuesday by upsetting the number twenty one seed, Amanda Anisimova, defeating the American in three sets.

And then she found herself in another battle with the Russian, Anna Blinkova, on Thursday, dropping the first set to the woman ranked 15 places above her in the standings, only to bounce back and take the next two.

Although Diyas won their only previous meeting that was five years ago. Since then Bertens has become a top ten player, whilst Diyas has seen her progress stall. Bertens also has the advantage of being comparatively well rested, whilst Diyas has had to play two tough three sets matches already.
