Fabio Fognini v Tennys Sandgren Head to Head

The pair have played each other three times before, with Fognini leading their head to head series by two matches to one. Fognini won on the clay of Rio in 2016, and Geneva in 2018, but Sandgren beat the Italian on grass at Wimbledon last year. That defeat earned Fognini a fine from the ATP after he said that Wimbledon should be blown up!

Fognini, Digging Deep in Melbourne

Winner of the doubles here in 2015 with Simone Bolelli, Fognini is into the fourth round in Melbourne for the third time, but he has never been further. The 32 year old, who won the biggest title of his career at the Monte Carlo Masters last year is better known as a clay court player, but he has dug deep into his reserves of stamina and experience to continue his run in this competition, having already survived two tough five set duels.

First he overcame the big-serving American Reilly Opelka in a match that lasted nearly four hours and was decided in a fifth set tie-break. His match with local favourite Jordan Thompson lasted even longer, but finished in a similar fashion, Fognini winning a fifth set tie break.

Fortunately for the sake of his legs, his third round match with Guido Pella was more straightforward and shorter – he beat the Argentine in straight sets.

Sandgren, Another Giant killing Run in Australia

Sandgren is the journeyman pro who first came to international prominence when he reached the quarter-finals here two years ago, beating the likes of Stan Wawrinka and Dominic Thiem along the way.

His form since then has fluctuated wildly. He won his first ATP title in Auckland last January, and reached the fourth round at Wimbledon, beating Fognini in the process. However, having been ranked as high as 41, a poor run of results in the second part of 2019 meant that he began this tournament barely making the top 100.

Yet there seems to be something in the air in Melbourne which agrees with him, as he has embarked on another giant killing spree again. He began with a comfortable straight sets win over the Argentine Marco Trungelliti, but then produced a major upset by beating Fognini’s compatriot and Davis Cup team mate Matteo Berrettini, coming from two sets to one down to knock out the number 8 seed.

He then beat fellow American Sam Querry in straight sets, a man ranked 55 places above him in the world.

Fabio Fognini v Tennys Sandgren Predictions & Tips

Fognini has already had to survive two five set battles, and this could easily become a third against a man who has shown a distinct liking for this tournament. However, the Italian has already shown all his fighting qualities in Australia, and they may be enough to get him over the line again.

Tip: Fognini to win in five sets: 5/1 (Click here to get these odds with Unibet)
