Richard Gasquet v Giles Simon Head to Head

This will be the tenth meeting between both players. Gasquet leads the head-to-head 8-1, having won all but their last meeting in 2018 at the Metz Open.

Both players were ranked top ten in the world at one point, and are incidentally now ranked  number 58 and 59 in the world respectively.

Gasquet Opens Bid For Montpellier Title #4

Three-time Montepllier champion Richard Gasquet has been on the tour for a decade and a half, dating back to his debut season in 2004-2005.

The Frenchman was ranked as high as world number seven at his peak and is a winner of 15 ATP titles and has been a semi-finalist at Wimbledon and at the US Open.

A consistent performer on the tour for several years, Gasquest has a game that is well-suited to most surfaces, with strong ground-strokes and a signature single handed backhand that ranks among the best in the sport.

The last season and a half has been one of injury breaks and poor form for Gasquet. He was out in early 2019 due to a hernia surgery. While his comeback was not the most convincing, he performed well at the ATP Masters in Cincinatti where he was a semi-finalist, being defeated by current world number 10, David Goffin.

Gasquet was ruled out of the Australian Open due to a knee injury and will be looking to make a strong comeback at one of his Happy Hunting Grounds, here at Montpellier.

Simon In Search Of Montpellier Success

Giles Simon has had a career with many similarities to that of Richard Gasquet.

He has also been on the tour for about a decade and a half, been ranked in the top ten of the ATP rankings at a point in time, been the winner of 14 ATP titles and looking to move back up in the ATP rankings.

Simon has been a consistent performer on the tour for a considerable period of time and has been intermittently successful in recent times as well.

The Frenchman won two ATP titles in 2018 and was a runner-up to Feliciano Lopez at the Queen’s Club ATP 500 last year.

He was a regular in the ATP top 50 rankings from 2005-2017, with 2017 being the first year he ended the year ranked outside the top 50.

A second round loss to home favorite Nick Kyrgios at the Australian Open was not the most ideal start to his season, and similar to Gasquet he will look for a deep run this week to get his confidence back on track.

Richard Gasquet v Giles Simon Predictions & Tips

This has all the ingredients of an interesting match-up between two veterans who can expect a lot of support from the French crowd.

Although Gasquet has won the title three times already, his recent injuries and lack of form do not make him an obvious favorite.

It remains to be seen how well he has recovered from the knee issues of late last season, as he is up against an opponent who can grind anyone down.

Expect the more match ready Simon to win  a three-setter.
