Serena Williams v Jelena Ostapenko Head to Head

Surprisingly, this is the first time that the world number nine Serena Williams and 40th-ranked Jelena Ostapenko will be facing off in a match.

Williams Looking to Get into the Groove

Since returning back from the birth of her daughter, Serena has been averse to playing in a lot of non-Grand Slam tennis. Which is why she played in only 34 matches last year, which included just 12 outside of the Grand Slams.

This year though, it does look like Serena could look to play a lot more as was evident from her participation at the Auckland Open, as she looks to grab that Margaret Court record of 24 Grand Slam titles. And with the Indian Wells and Miami Open to follow next month, Serena Williams would be looking to achieve a dual objective of pulling USA through to the Fed Cup finals and remaining attuned to her game in the lead-up to March.

Serena is coming off a shock loss at the hands of Wang Qiang at the Australian Open, having gone in as the favourite to win her 24th major. She will hope to put that behind her and register a straightforward victory here.

Ostapenko Hoping to Overcome Personal Tragedy

Ostapenko is a former French Open winner but her career seemed to be floundering as she struggled through to a 28-22 win-loss record in 2018 and fell to an even worse performance in 2019. The Latvian went into the last few weeks with barely a win to her name last year.

It was towards the end of the season when Ostapenko brought in Marion Bartoli as the coach when things began to change for the better for her. Ostapenko made it to back to back finals at Linz and Luxembourg and won the latter to go into the season-end with a lot more hope.

This year, Ostapenko was hit by a personal tragedy, losing her dad which is why she opted to miss the Auckland Open. She decided to play the Australian Open to keep herself busy and managed to make the second round of the competition but then lost to Belinda Bencic in the second.
