Elena Rybakina v Fiona Ferro Head to Head

This will be the first meeting between Rybakina and Ferro.

Rybakina at Her Career Best

Exactly a year ago, Rybakina was 196th on the WTA Rankings chart. Since then she went on a roll which saw her win the Bucharest Open and get to the final of one other WTA tournament.

However, what stood out for Rybakina was her consistency. Since switching over from the lower circuit to the Istanbul Open, she made it to the quarterfinals or better at seven of the tournaments. And despite struggling at the Slams – she didn’t make it past the first round at any of them – Rybakina’s efforts took her to a season-ending 36th in the world.

She has maintained her form this year, making it to back to back WTA finals, and winning the the Hobart International title. Rybakina also entered the third round at the Australian Open where she was beaten by Ash Barty before winning her opening round match here against Katerina Siniakova 6-3, 6-4.

Ferro Hoping to Turn it Around on Non-Clay

Ferro also won her maiden WTA title last season – was on clay – but the start to this one could have been better. The most obvious issue is her struggle on non-clay surfaces – she was 17-7 on clay last year and 15-20 on other surfaces in 2019 – and now she faces an opponent who is on a bit of a roll.

Where she will derive some confidence is she needed to win back to back matches in the qualifying rounds before stunning Caroline Garcia in her opening round here. Ferro had also won her opening round matches at the Australian Open and the Hobart International but couldn’t do too much more beyond that.

Having been 116th in the world around 11 months ago, Ferro’s also at her career-best right now at 58th and she will be itching to take that jump ahead. Except she might have to wait till we get to clay.
