Yoshihito Nishioka v Brandon Nakashima Head to Head

This will be the first match between the 63rd-ranked Nishioka and Nakashima, who is 294th in the world.

Good Start to the Season for Nishioka

A third round at the Australian Open earlier this year has been the highlight for Nishioka, whose best Grand Slam performance before that was a second round exit at the previous French Open and another one at the US Open last season. It took Novak Djokovic to send him out.

Earlier in the season, he had won a couple of matches at the ATP Cup, again, losing only to Rafael Nadal, before making it to the second round at the New York Open.

A quarterfinal here at Delray Beach comes on the heel of a first round exit last season at this competition, but more vitally, after having made it to just three quarterfinals at ATP competitions last season, this will be a huge boost to his morale. Having won just one title in his career so far, Nishioka will be gunning to double his tally here and he looks like he has the goods and a reasonable draw to do just that as well.

The Big Surprise Called Nakashima

Speaking of a reasonable draw, one of the reasons why Nishioka could well be tipped to make at least the final is his quarterfinalist opponent is one ranked nearly 300th in the world and there are no big-ticket players left in his half of the draw either.

That said, Nakashima has impressed quite a few players despite his 18 years of age and inexperience. So much so, this is just his first ATP competition, having received a wild-card to feature in it and having done rather well too. In fact, last September, Nakashima was ranked 942nd in the world and his rise, which will see him nearly touch the 250th in the world even if he loses this match, can well be termed spectacular.

Pat Cash, his new coach, who joined him few days before the start of this tournament, has been duly impressed too. He said it was great to work with a talented youngster like Nakashima who has also shown focus and keenness. Whether that will bring him further success in this tournament remains to be seen but for now, the American looks to have done enough to convince Cash he could be one for the future.

Yoshihito Nishioka v Brandon Nakashima Predictions & Tips

It’s interesting to see Nakashima has impressed bookmakers enough for him to start off as short as 11/8 to win this match. Sure, he isn’t a favourite but coming up against a 63rd-ranked player, it’s tough to expect that anyway. This also allows us to go with a safe option of Nishioka to win this at 4/7.
