Ugo Humbert v Frances Tiafoe Head to Head

This will be the second match between Frances Tiafoe and Ugo Humbert. The first time they played was at the Next Gen ATP Finals last year where Tiafoe won by three sets to one.

Auckland Winner Humbert Pushing on to Another Semi-Final

While Humbert was a straight-set winner over Miomir Kecmanovic in the second round, it wasn’t a match without a struggle for the victor. The sixth-seeded Frenchman faced a set point in the second to overcome his Serb opponent and seal his last-eight berth, winning 6-4, 7-6(6).

In fact, Kecmanovic had a chance to serve out the set at 6-5 but was broken and then earned himself a set-point which he lost en route the Humbert victory. This meant the Frenchman finally stalled a run of defeats at the hands of Kecmanovic, having lost to him thrice already including once most recently in New York.

Humbert admitted he was relieved to have beaten Kecmanovic, a player who had a wood on him and after the match he also said he was looking to derive confidence from his title victory at the Auckland Open earlier this year. Having beaten the likes of Ruud, Cecchinato, Shapovalov, Isner and Paire in Auckland, it was a win which would keep in a solid stead in the times to come.

Tiafoe in Second Successive Quarterfinal

Having struggled through the latter half of 2019, Tiafoe did not have the best of starts to this season either. First round losses at the Doha Open, Auckland Open and in the first major at Melbourne left him with no option but to feature in back to back Challengers in the USA to try and get some rhythm back.

He was beaten in the third round at Newport but made it to the quarterfinal at Dallas two weeks ago. And now, with some of his rhythm back, Tiafoe has reached his second successive last-eight, although this has a lot more on stake.

Tiafoe defeated Tommy Paul 7-5, 7-6(4) after been down 2-5 in the second, and will now take on a friend in Humbert. If Tiafoe does win this match, it would be his first ever semifinal on the ATP circuit – not including the Next Gen Finals obviously – since he made the last four stage at the Estoril Open in 2018. Incidentally, Tiafoe’s only ATP title had also come in Delray Beach in 2018, so this could well be a tight encounter.

Ugo Humbert v Frances Tiafoe Predictions & Tips

On paper, Humbert seems to be a favourite but not by much with bet365 offering 4/5 for his win and 1/1 for a Tiafoe victory. We will have to go with the Frenchman since he has only recently been there, done that.

Tip: Humbert to win: 4/5 (Click here to get these odds with Unibet)
