Ugo Humbert v Yoshihito Nishioka Head to Head

The pair have never played each other before. This will be the first match between the 21 year old Frenchman, and the Japanese, three years his senior.

Humbert, Winner in Auckland

21 year old Humbert confirmed his status as one of the rising stars of the game by clinching his maiden ATP title in Auckland last month, beating both Denis Shapovalov and John Isner in the process.

That followed an impressive 2019 which saw him win three Challenger titles – in Cherbourg, Istanbul, and Brest – and book a place at the NextGen ATP finals in Milan, where he beat the eventual winner Jannik Sinner of Italy.

This week, he struggled initially in his first round match against the American Stefan Kozlov, dropping the first set against the wildcard, being bouncing back to win the next two. However, his win against the Serb Miomir Kecmanovic in the second round was more comfortable, and he brushed aside the challenge of the American Frances Tiafoe, who won the title in Delray Beach two years ago, winning their quarter-final on Friday for the loss of just three games.

Yoshihito, Second Ranked Japanese Player

The world number 63 and second ranked Japanese player, Nishioka has a single ATP tournament win to his name, the 2018 Shenzen Open, although the only top ten player he has ever beaten is the man he regards as his hero, Kei Nishikori.

His form coming into Delray Beach was mixed. He played a solitary match for Japan at the ATP Cup, where he lost to Rafael Nadal, and was then beaten in the second round of the Challenger event in Bendigo. However, he did reach the third round of the Australian Open before losing to Novak Djokovic.

Last week in New York he lost to Reilly Opelka in the second round, but came from a set down in the first round here to defeat the experienced Australian John Millman. A straight sets win over the American Noah Rubin then followed, but he was given an almighty fright by the world number 294 Brandon Nakashima in their quarter final on Friday.

He dropped the first set to the American, only levelled the match in the second on a tie-break, and, having raced to a 5 -1 lead in the third, saw his opponent reel off three games in a row to narrow the gap. However, he held serve when he most needed it to close out the match.
