Rybakina has arguably been the player of the season so far this year. She has won one title at Shenzhen to start the season and has reached three more finals at Hobart, Saint Petersburg and Dubai. She lost an extremely close contest against Simona Halep in Dubai where she went down in a tough three-setter.
Currently ranked number 19 in the world, she will achieve her best ever ranking when the next set of rankings are released. It is a remarkable rise for a player who began last season at 186 in the world. It will be interesting to see how quickly she can recover from the tough loss. This will be the first time she is participating in the event.
Cîrstea an Experienced Campaigner on the tour
For someone who had turned professional just at the age of 16, Cirstea took the tour by storm in her early years. She broke into the top 40 in the rankings at the age of 18. She also won her maiden title at Tashkent in the same year. A year later in 2009, she reached the quarter-finals at the French Open which till date remains her best showing at a Grand Slam.
But frequent injuries and loss of form have meant that her career never quite took off the way she would have hoped for. Her only other notable run on the tour came back in 2013 when she reached the finals of the Canadian Open. She lost out to Serena Williams on that occasion.
She hasn’t gone beyond the second round at any of the four events she has played in this season. This will be her sixth appearance in Dubai where she hasn’t managed to go beyond the second round either.

Rybakina will be keen to get back to the winning ways as soon as possible. And Cirstea will find herself unlucky to be the one to have come in her way after a tough loss. Barring something spectacular, Rybakina should win this one quite comfortably.
