Garbine Muguruza v Daria Kasatkina Head to Head

This is an interesting rivalry in that both have won two matches apiece in the four played between them. Both of Kasatkina’s wins came in 2018 when she was at the peak of her own prowess, having grown to 10th on the WTA rankings. Since then they haven’t played and both their form has tapered off to different extent. Muguruza’s wins came at the 2015 Marrakech and 2017 Brisbane tournaments.

Muguruza Coming off Surprise Exit

After having made it to the Australian Open final, where she lost to Sofia Kenin, a lot has been expected out of Muguruza. After all, it had been a while since she had shown the kind of sparkle she did at the first major of the season – she hadn’t gone past the fourth round of a major since the 2018 French Open and even there she reached just once.

She looked like she was cruising to a win against Kim Clijsters at Dubai in her first match on return from Melbourne. A set and two breaks up, she lost her way a little and had to win it the hard way, in a second set tie-breaker. A three-setter against Veronika Kuermetova followed where Muguruza didn’t look convincing at all and then went down to Jennifer Brady in the quarterfinals there.

Muguruza has said Grand Slams get the best out of her, which is why she might have still been feeling her way back in but at Doha where there’s a plethora of solid, top competition, one can expect her to be at her best again.

Kasatkina Hoping to Regain Touch

Following a very potent 2018 season, Kasatkina has fallen away badly in the seasons that have followed. Last year, she won just 13 of her 34 matches, and this year has been no better.

As Kasatkina tries to go back to the drawing board and understand how to turn things around, she is still trying to feature at the top level of tennis and struggling to even make the main draw at times. After an opening round win at the Auckland Open this year, Kasatkina hasn’t won a single main draw match over the next four tournaments.

Ad Adelaide she qualified with a couple of wins but lost to Belinda Bencic in the opener, and then lost in the first rounds in Melbourne and St. Petersburg Open again. Last week, Kasatkina didn’t even qualify for the main draw of the Dubai Open. Things will need a drastic turnaround from here on if she needs her time back in the limelight at the top.
