Rafael Nadal v Pablo Andujar Head to Head

This will be the fourth match between Nadal and Andujar and the world number two has won each time before this. All the matches between them came on clay, between 2011 and 2014 and Andujar has managed to win just one set across those three encounters.

Nadal’s Return after Australian Open Exit

Having made it to the final at the Australian Open last season, Nadal was sent out in the quarterfinal this year by Dominic Thiem. He lost in four sets, three of which went to the tie-breaker after Nadal had shown great nerves to go past Nick Kyrgios in the previous match.

Nadal had earlier kick-started the season at the ATP Cup where he won his first three singles, before David Goffin shocked him in the quarterfinals. Spain still progressed to the semifinals where he eked out a win over Alex De Minaur before facing and losing to Novak Djokovic in the final.

With Nadal having won 15 titles spread over the past three years, he will want to get on the board quickly. At Acapulco, last season, he was sent out by Kyrgios in the second round. This time around Nadal and Kyrgios are in different halves and that makes a possibility of a title-decider between these two a remote but a mouth-watering one.

For starters, however, Nadal will need to get started with a clinical display against Andujar.

Poor 2020 for Andujar So Far

Once ranked 32nd in the world, Andujar hasn’t fallen away that badly in recent times, having only lost 27 places to his best ranking. However, the start to 2020 has been anything but good for Andujar.

Having participated in six tournaments so far this year, Andujar has won just two matches, and lost six. Both his match victories came on clay, a second round appearance at both Cordoba and Rio but he didn’t go beyond that. Add to that the first round losses at the Argentina Open on clay and Doha, Auckland and Australian Open on hard court, it seems like a surprising call to play at Acapulco.

After all, hard court surfaces haven’t been his favourite anyway, having had a 43-89 on them across all levels of tennis in his career. And now that he has Nadal up against him, it doesn’t look like his mood going to be improving any time soon.

Rafael Nadal v Pablo Andujar Predictions & Tips

Nadal should win in straight sets given the discrepancy in the tennis pedigree and Andujar’s obvious issues on hard court surfaces. Might even see a quickfire encounter that barely lasts an hour.

Tip: Under 18.5 games in the match: 6/5 (Click here to get these odds with Unibet)
