Marketa Vondrousova v Saisai Zheng Head to Head

These two players have met once on tour. Vondrousova won that match in straight sets in the first round at Eastbourne last year.

Vondrousova Recorded A Career-Best Season in 2019

Marketa Vondrousova won her maiden WTA title at the age of 17, establishing herself as one of the brightest young talents on the women’s tour. Her ranking skyrocketed from No.233 in April 2017 to inside the top-100 at the end of May that same year. But she went into wilderness for a defined period, a year to be precise.

Injuries played a huge part in her demise in that period, but the Czech left-hander returned with a point to prove in 2019 season. In what was a watershed moment for the 20-year-old, she spectacularly overcame all the odds to reach the French Open final last year before losing to Ashleigh Barty in straight sets.

Although she did not acquit herself well in her first Grand Slam final, there was a lot to admire of her creative and varied game which saw her establish a terrific 29-9 win-loss record during the first six months of the 2019 season.

Unfortunately for Vondrousova, as was the case during her embryonic tennis years, she succumbed to a wrist injury after a first round loss at Wimbledon to Madison Brengle. She decided to shut down her season completely.

Zheng Is A Tricky Opener

Saisai Zheng is a tricky opener for Vondrousova given the Chinese woman’s hard-court pedigree. Over half of her 28 wins last season came on hard courts, and sensationally knocked down four seeded players, including the likes of Danielle Collins, Maria Sakkari and Aryna Sabalenka to win her first and thus far only singles WTA tour title at the Mubadala Silicon Valley in San Jose.

That title win was Zheng’s biggest in singles competition, surpassing the WTA 125K she won in Anning, and she also recorded respectable last-16 appearances at Premier Mandatory events of Madrid and Beijing.

Zheng ended the year at the WTA Elite Trophy where she upset America’s Madison Keys in the group stages, but fell to Kiki Bertens in the semifinal.

The 26-year-old is sitting at No.37 in the rankings, just one spot down from her career-high of World No.36 which she achieved in October 2019.

Marketa Vondrousova v Saisai Zheng Predictions & Tips

Vondrousova underwent wrist surgery towards the end of last year and it is nice to see that the injury is now behind her after making an impressive comeback with a quarterfinal showing in Brisbane. However, she has only won one match since, and that was a first round in Dubai last week. Zheng is no slouch on hard courts, and she pushed rising star Elena Rybakina in Shenzhen. I still fancy the Czech to come through though not in straight sets.

Tip: Vondrousova to win in three sets: 10/3 (Click here to get these odds with Unibet)
