This will be the first time Bertens will be facing the 27th-ranked Muchova in their careers.
In-Form Bertens Fresh From a Title Win
A quarterfinal at Brisbane and a fourth round exit at the Australian Open can be termed as decent results but for a player ranked eighth – and fourth last season thanks to the five titles she has won over the past two years – it was probably below-par. Which is why she would have gone into the St. Petersburg Open with a point or two to prove.
And she did that well. After getting a first round bye, Bertens just one set en route lifting the trophy, and it included a final win against Elena Rybakina. What makes that win special is Rybakina’s form which has seen her make it to four title-deciders already this year and one title win among those.
To beat the in-form Rybakina as easily as Bertens did would have been a tremendous boost, as she now looks to add a second WTA Premier 5 tournament victory to her kitty. Bertens had a first round bye and now faces Muchova in the second.

Muchova Needs to Arrest Slide
Muchova did not have to spend too much time on court in getting the better of Magda Linette in her first round match at the Doha Open. She won 6-3, 6-1 to book her place in the second against Bertens and given how her season has transpired so far that would come as a huge relief.
After an early, first round exit at the Brisbane International, Muchova was stretched to a three-setter in the opening round of the Australian Open before losing to Cici Bellis in the second. And another opening round defeat in Dubai, Muchova was probably staring at a few hard question-marks coming into the tournament.
Linette, after all, is a doughty player and for Muchova to come through the way she did would have given her a lot of confidence. Would that help her enough to get past the world number eight though? Doubtful.
