Elise Mertens v Yulia Putintseva Head to Head

The two players have only met once in their career. Incidentally, this was earlier this month, when Belgium played Kazakhstan in the Fed Cup, and Mertens prevailed in straight sets.

Defending Champion Mertens To Coast Along

24-year-old Elise Mertens of Belgium won her first Premier Titler last year unseeded, here in Doha, defeating Simona Halep. She, therefore comes in with the added pressure and expectations of being the defending champion.

Among her other successes in 2019 were wins on the doubles court with partner Aryna Sabalenka. The doubles pair won the Sunshine Masters of Indian Wells and Miami, as well as the US Open.

She reached a career high singles ranking of 12, but is now ranked just within the top 20 in the world.

2020 has seen her lose in the quarter-finals at Shenzhen and Hobart, and make the round of 16 at the Australian Open and last week at the Dubai Open, where she incidentally lost to her doubles partner Sablenka.

Martens got off to a convincing start here against Wang Qiang in her opener, dropping only three games en route a straight sets win and is looking comfortable amidst soaring expectations.

Putintseva Looking To Carry On Form From 2019

25-year-old Kazakh Yulina Putintseva has been on the tour for a few years, but it took her until 2017 to qualify for her first WTA final and only won her first title last year.

More comfortable on the slower surfaces, she is a two time French open quarter-finalist and her first WTA title was also on the clay courts in Germany.

2019 was a successful year for Putintseva, which saw her reach a career high ranking of 27, including two wins against Naomi Osaka, one of which was at Wimbledon in the opening round.

She has played a fair bit of tennis already in 2020, mostly on the faster hard courts. Although this is amongst her less favored surfaces, she has done well to defeat the likes of Danielle Collins and Donna Vekic.

Putintseva had a convincing opening round win here in Doha, against Timea Babos of Hungary, in straight sets.
