Garbine Muguruza v Ajla Tomljanovic Head to Head

It will be the fourth time when Muguruza meets Tomljanovic. The Spaniard has a 2-1 win record, which includes a second round victory over the Croatian-born player at the Australian Open this year.

Muguruza Survives a Scare

Eleventh seed Garbine Muguruza survived a scare in the first round of the Qatar Open on Sunday, as she edged past Russia’s Daria Kasatkina in a thrilling three-setter.

In what was the fifth contest between the former Top 10 players, Muguruza took a 7-5, 5-2 lead before throwing away the initiative and allowing the World No. 73 to come back into the contest.

Staging a remarkable fight back, the Russian forced the decider winning five games in a row. It was the fourth time in five meetings that their contest went into the third set.

Having squandered a chance to close out the match, Muguruza needed to steady her nerves and the Spaniard did exactly that as she prevailed in the epic two-hour-and-49-minute battle 7-5, 5-7, 6-3.

The World No. 16 Muguruza, who won the French Open in 2016 and the Wimbledon in 2017, has had a terrific start to 2020, having not lost before the quarterfinal stage in any of the tournaments so far this year.

She reached the semifinals of the Shenzhen Open; followed it up with two wins in Hobart before pulling out of the last eight. Next she made that emphatic run to the final of the Australian Open only to see her title hopes dashed by American Sofia Kenin.

Last week in Dubai, Muguruza was beaten by another American, Jennifer Brady, in the quarterfinals.

On Tuesday, the aggressive baseliner will be up against an opponent who stretched her to three sets in Melbourne.

Tomljanovic Eases Past Hon

While Muguruza had to sweat it out against Kasatkina, Tomljanovic didn’t need to expend much of her energy as she dispatched compatriot Priscilla Hon 6-2, 6-4 in a match that lasted just an hour and eight minutes.

The 54th-ranked Tomljanovic, who is yet to win a WTA singles title, is 5-5 this year, having made the second round of Brisbane International, Adelaide Open, Australian Open and St. Peteresburg Open but not progressing beyond that stage.

Last week, she was beaten by American Bethanie Mattek-Sands in the qualifiers in Dubai.

Garbine Muguruza v Ajla Tomljanovic Predictions & Tips

Having struggled for form over the last two years, Muguruza has made a resounding comeback this season and she will be expected to win against Tomljanovic on Tuesday.

Their last meeting, though, wasn’t a piece of cake for the Spaniard as the Australian took the contest to three before coming up short against the eventual runner-up. Should Tomljanovic take it to three again, she should have a good chance of winning, as Muguruza will be feeling the effects of back-to-back draining contests. Muguruza should, however, win this one in two.
