Auger-Aliassime Close to His Best

After a bit of a dip in his form last year, Auger-Aliassime looks to have returned back to his best and as far as rankings go, his 19th is two away from his career-best too. Another strong run this week in Acapulco and he should be back there.

It wasn’t always like that this year though, having started off miserably at the ATP Cup where he lost three of his four matches, and then lost at the Australian Open first round. Auger-Aliassime did win a match at Montpellier but his true resurrection seems to have come in the two weeks leading up to this competition in Acapulco.

First at Rotterdam, he marched into the final before losing to Gael Monfils and then made it two in two at Marseille, but lost to Stefanos Tsitsipas. With that kind of confidence coming into this tournament, he was a straight-set winner over Alex Bolt in his first round match and will now take on Edmund.

Edmund Inching His Way Back to His Best

It’s interesting to note Edmund himself had a solid run in the leadup to this tournament following a lacklustre beginning to the season. Once ranked 14th in the world, Edmund has slid down the rankings having last won a title in 2018 before this year began.

He fell in the first round in Doha, and to make matters worse, Edmund also lost in the first round at the Australian Open. He had earlier had a wretched 2019 as well as far as the Grand Slams are concerned, with two opening round exits and another couple in the second round.

Which is why his showing at the New York Open might have come out of the blue but would have done his confidence a world of good. Edmund got slightly with the draw alright but take nothing away from the title win at the New York Open and he followed that up with a straight-set drubbing of Feliciano Lopez.
