John Isner v Marcos Giron Head to Head

Interestingly, Isner and Giron have met just once before and that match came a long time ago, in 2014 at the US Open. It was a first round encounter that Isner won in straight sets against the 115th-ranked Giron.

Isner Hoping to Overturn Poor Season Start

Before the start of this tournament, Isner was 4-6 on win-loss record before he defeated Mischa Zverev in his opening round, 6-3, 7-6 to reduce that deficit a tad. Now, he has a chance to level things up with a match against a player ranked outside the top 100 but more importantly string together a couple of wins.

It’s been a tad tough for him this season for him. Isner began with a horrid ATP Cup which saw him lose all three of his singles matches, arguably to stiff opponents like Daniil Medvedev, Fabio Fognini and Casper Ruud. However, a semifinal exit at Auckland to Ugo Humbert followed and then a foot-related injury which forced him to retire in his third round match at the Australian Open.

He returned to play at the New York Open where he was beaten in the first match he played in three sets, going down to Jordan Thompson. A win here will probably put him face to face with some stiff opposition for his quarter-final against Alexander Zverev but that’s for later. Complacency combined with poor form has laid many a sportspeople low.

Trying to Make a Step Up, Giron

Ranked outside the top 100, Giron’s best career ranking has never seen him make it to the top 100 either but he had a good year at the lower circuit in 2019. Giron won a couple of Challenger tournaments on the hard courts of Houston and Orlando, including the last competition he played in, in the year.

He was ousted in the first match he played at Canberra earlier this year but followed it up with a semifinal at the Bendigo Challenger. Opening defeats at the Australian Open and Newport Beach followed but he won his first ATP main draw match in New York when he defeated the returning Jack Sock.

Ugo Humbert then crushed him 6-1, 6-0 in the second round in that competition.

Now, having won a qualifier here, Giron had no real trouble getting past Gerardo Villasenor, a 518th-ranked player but things could get really hot now in round two.

John Isner v Marcos Giron Predictions & Tips
