Venus Williams v Anna Karolína Schmiedlova Head to Head

They have played each other twice with both Williams and Schmiedlova having won one match apiece. However, both those matches were played in 2014, at Miami where Williams won in straight sets and then at the French Open where Schmiedlova needed three sets to get past her American opponent.

Two Played, Two Lost for Venus

Venus Williams hasn’t been playing a lot of tennis as her career reaches its twilight, with 28 matches in 2018 and 34 last season. This year, we are already in the third month of the season and Venus has participated in two tournaments, and lost in the first round at both.

She started her campaign at the Australian Open where Cori Gauff got the better of her again in straight sets. Gauff had earlier beaten her at last year’s Wimbledon. This was followed by an appearance at Acapulco where Williams was expected to get past Kaja Juvan, a player who has never been ranked in the top 100.

Unfortunately for Venus, she went down after having taken a lead in the first set, losing 4-6, 7-6, 6-2. Now she starts off another campaign in the lead-up to the Indian Wells where she made it to the quarterfinals last season. A couple of wins here could go a long way in putting her back in fray to be very competitive in the early stages of that event but for now, can she notch up her first victory of the season?

Schmiedlova Looking for a Turnaround

A former world number 26, Anna Karolina Schmiedlova was flying high as she won her third WTA title in 2018 at Bogota. Since then, however, her career has taken bit of a U-turn, with 2019 being a less than average year for the Slovakian player.

With a 13-15 win-loss record last season, Schmiedlova has now fallen to 200th in the world, and left with an obvious push to play in the qualifying competitions of various tournaments. She fell at those hurdles in Brisbane and Hobart, then lost in the first round at the Australian Open as a wild-card before crashing out of the Acapulco Open in her opener too.

Schmiedlova’s brightest points of the season have come in the Fed Cup prior to the Mexican Open where she won both her singles matches against Britain. She has now won back to back qualifiers to make the main draw here but can she now overcome the Venus Williams challenge in her opener?

Venus Williams v Anna Karolína Schmiedlova Predictions & Tips

Venus Williams looks favourite to register her first win despite having played just two matches here given her solid experience. Might even make it in straight sets.
