Stephens Enduring Terrible Run of Form

The winner of the US Open in 2017, along with five other WTA titles, the woman who was once ranked as high as three in the world, has not made a final since 2018, as her form has continued to slump.

And 2020 has started even worse for the player from Florida – prior to Monterrey, she had entered four events, and been knocked out in the first round in all of them.

That sequence began in Brisbane, where she lost to Liudmila Samsonova of Russia, and then continued through to Adelaide, where she was beaten by the Australian Arina Rodionova. Then it was the turn of Saisai Zhang of China in Melbourne.

After a month off, she returned to action in Acapulco last week, where she was the number one seed, but promptly lost to the Mexican wildcard Renata Zarazua. It will have come as a relief when she finally won a match in the first round here, beating Emma Navarro in three sets on Tuesday, but, to put that result into context, the American qualifier is ranked 497 in the world.

Fernandez, Beaten Finalist in Acapulco

The 17 year old reigning junior French Open champion is fast making a name for herself on the senior tour, winning her first ITF title on home soil in Gattinea, last July.

Then last month, playing for Canada in the Fed Cup in Switzerland, she shocked Belinda Bencic, the world number five at the time, beating her in straight sets in front of her home crowd.

Last week in Monterrey, she reached the final without dropping a set, beating a succession of players ranked higher than her, including the number eight seed Nao Hibino. She eventually lost to Heather Watson in three sets, but emerged with a growing reputation and a much higher ranking, rising to 126 in the world.

And she confirmed that progress by beating the Swiss player, Stefanie Vogele in straight sets on Tuesday, another player ranked currently higher than her, winning the first set on a tie break and then easing through the second.

Sloane Stephens v Leylah Annie Fernandez Predictions & Tips

Although Stephens is the seed and the higher ranked player, she is out of form and low on confidence. By contrast, the Canadian teenager has confidence in abundance after her recent results, and has shown that she is not afraid of reputations.
