Sofia Kenin v Jaqueline Cristian Head to Head

The pair have never played each other before. This will be the first meeting between the two 21-year-olds, currently separated by 169 places in the world rankings.

The world number five Kenin, has had a difficult time getting her feet back on the ground again after her exploits in Melbourne, where she won her maiden Grand Slam title, beating home favourite and world number one Ashleigh Barty in the last four, and Garbine Muguruza of Spain in the final.

Since then though she has struggled for form, perhaps under the pressure of the added media attention that comes with being a Grand Slam winner. She had mixed fortunes playing for the USA in the Fed Cup against Latvia, beating Anastasija Sevastova, but then losing to Jelena Ostapenko.

Kenin was then beaten in her first match in Dubai by Elena Rybakina in three sets, and then was beaten at the same stage in Doha last week by Ukraine’s Dayana Yastremska.

She beat Vitalia Diatchenko of Russia in here first round match on Wednesday in straight sets, but was not always totally convincing against the world 107.

Cristian’s First Senior WTA Event of 2020

Currently ranked 174 in the world, Cristian is better known on the ITF circuit, where she has won 10 events, the most recent of which came only last month in Trnava, Slovakia, where she beat Sofya Lansere, after the Russian was forced to retire injured from their final.

She rarely qualifies for main tour events, but has reached one doubles final, losing the Bucharest Open last year with partner Elena-Gabriela Ruse on home soil.

Lyon is the first time that she has qualified for the main draw of a senior WTA event this year, beating fist Nuria Parrizas-Dias of Spain and then Belgium’s Lara Salden to take her place in the first round.

There she had a good straight sets win over the Australian Priscilla Hon, a player ranked 45 places higher than her in the world at the moment.

Although Kenin has been struggling to re-discover her best form after her exploits in Melbourne, she is playing an opponent who has no experience of playing in this type of tournament, and should win without too much difficulty.
