Wang Yafan v Marie Bouzkova Head to Head

The pair have met once before, in Acapulco last year, Wang winning easily in straight sets.

Wang in Poor Form Coming into Monterrey

Wang has won one senior WTA event, the Mexican Open last year, when she beat Sofia Kenin in the final. She has also enjoyed some success in doubles, winning three events, the most prestigious of which was the WTA Elite Trophy in 2015, where she lifted the cup with compatriot Liang Chen.

However, she entered this tournament after a disappointing start to her 2020 campaign, beginning in Shenzen, where she was beaten in the second round by Elena Rybakina.

She then lost in the first round in the next four events that she entered – in Hobart, Melbourne, Hua Hin and, last week, in Acapulco.

It was, therefore, a relief when she beat the Spaniard Lara Arruabarrena in straight sets in the first round on Monday. And even more so when she overcame the challenge of the Australian, Astra Sharma in three sets on Wednesday to reach the third round of an event for the first time in 2020.

Bouzkova Also Struggling for Form

The winner of the 2014 girls’ singles at the US Open, Bouzkova made a name for herself on the senior tour at the Rogers Cup last year when she got to the semi-finals, beating Sloane Stephens, Jelena Ostapenko, and Simona Halep along the way, before losing to Serena Williams, but not before taking a set off the former world number one.

She has yet to win a senior WTA title, but was a runner-up in the 125k event in Abierto Zapopan. Mexico last year, and has won 12 ITF tournaments, the most recent of which was in Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan last year.

Like Wang though, she was in poor form prior to this event. Bouzkova had a disappointing Australian season, qualifying for Brisbane only to lose in the first round to Madison Keys, and then suffering opening round defeats in Hobart and Melbourne as well.

She did reach the third round of the ITF tournament in Nicholasville, USA, but suffered another first round defeat at the Mexico Open last week at the hands of the German, Tatjana Maria.

However, she has enjoyed two straight sets victories in Monterrey so far, both over Slovakian opponents, defeating first Kristina Kucova, and then Anna Karolina Schmiedlova.

Wang Yafan v Marie Bouzkova Predictions & Tips

This is a match between two opponents who have very little form between them so far this year. However, Wang won their only previous encounter, which was also on Mexican soil, and will start the favourite to do so again.
