Dominic Thiem v Roberto Bautista Agut Head to Head

These two have played each other four times and surprise, surprise, Bautista Agut has won three of those encounters. All those three wins, as one would have suspected, came a while back though – in 2015 to be more precise – but since then, in their only match in 2018, Thiem crushed his opponent in straight sets.

Thiem’s Not Lost too Much This Year

The post coronavirus period has been kind to Thiem on the court (despite some of his off-court problems). He’s participated in 22 matches across various tournaments in Europe and won 20 of those matches, including a couple at the Ultimate Tennis Showdown in the last week of June.

In this competition he organised himself, Thiem enters the semifinal on the back of three strong performances during the league stage. Playing on his most preferred surface, Thiem is yet to drop a set, beating Casper Ruud, Andrey Rublev and Jan-Lennard Struff.

All of these players could have tested Thiem on another day but the kind of form the Austrian has been, it’s been reasonably straightforward for him. The advantage Thiem has also had is the amount of tennis he’s participated in as compared to the rest, giving him a further edge over his rusty opponents.

Bautista Agut 2-1 in the League Stage

The Spaniard world number 12 kick-started the tournament with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Karen Khachanov but then fell away to a shock loss at the hands of Matteo Berrettini. It wasn’t so much he lost – after all Berrettini is eighth in the world – but the manner of his defeat, as he went down 6-4, 6-3.

Needing to win his final league stage encounter, Bautista Agut rallied back to find his mojo, crushing Dennis Novak 6-1, 6-0 to wrap up his place in the semifinal.

For someone who had played just a couple of matches before this tournament since the last week of February, this has been an excellent going. Barring that blip against Berrettini, the Spaniard has shown no signs of having been away from the game.

On clay, however, testing Thiem will be a challenge ad RBA will need to bring out his best.

Dominic Thiem v Roberto Bautista Agut Predictions & Tips

Thiem starts off a favourite and we are backing him to win this one (2/5 with bet365) but the big question is can he do it in straight sets? He is a favourite there too, with bet365 offering 10/11 for Thiem to win 2-0. There have been occasions during his league stage encounters where Thiem has looked like the set might run away from him but he has shown he has enough his tank to not allow that. We think that would continue here.

Tip: Thiem to win 2-0: 10/11 (Click here to get these odds with Unibet)
